3/8/14 Claiborne went to shivers hill to listen and was not disappointed. by 715 48 gobbles by 6 different birds moved to bald hil at 715 and over the next hour had 8 gobbles by 4 birds.... really and looking forward to next weekend.
3/15 Claiborne old camp section Cliff and I were a lil late arriving and someone had signed into the sections I had wanted to hunt so we decided on the old camp section.... we eased down the old logging road toward the creek and only heard one bird gobble but it was so far away I figured it was in a different section and being new to the camp didn't want to mess up. we set up on the creek and made some soft yelps. to no avail... Did see a couple of hens fly down on the other side of the creek and a few deer... at 10:30 we decided to regroup and went to camp and changed our location and off to the cutover... we got to the top of the big hill and made a few calls with the box and no gobbles so we went to easing around on the ridges to the cutover as we approached the top of the ridge on the boundary we heard a hen making small talk so we attempted to talk to her.. Apparently she didn't like what we had to say so she headed down the treeline... so we backed out made a big circle in the cutover and tried to get in front of her.. we didn't go quite far enuff as we got set we saw her another hen and a gobbler about 150 yards in front of us. so we attempted to get her or the gobbler to respond but it just wasn't happening. we made another big cicle and this time we got in front of them by about 200 yards... I didn't realize a creek formed in the cutover right there about 100 yards out we just sat there and watched as they got to the creek and fed off into the woods..... by now it was 2:30 and it was time to call it a day and try again tomorrow
3/29 after not hunting for a weekdue to a risen on my butt I am more than ready to be in the woods so to the lease I go to see if I can sit fer a while. I go to listening spot #2 I here a bird gobble about 300 yards up the hill and go get set up.... I softly yelp and he cut me off so I decide to sit and wait,,, Know I aint sitting very still sue to the fact my butt is still really sore I think he may have seen me move.. hunt till 1015 and heard nothing else
3/30 Claiborne county went to old camp area heard 3 birds gobble for a total of 4 times and I starting to wonder if this is the trend for the year I did call a hen and a jake in after which I moved to a spot about 300 yards to the nnw... called another hen in nothing else heard but it was fun arguing with the hen
4/11 hinds The day starts off hearing 2 birds gobble in two different directions. we decide to wait and see if one will speak again to no avail... so we go to another spot cant get nothing to talk... we go to 2 more spots nadda.... I tell BL I might as well go on to work and as we are about half way up the hill where we started some geese cut loose so BL said lets see what happens..... He makes some loud yelps and get sut off by a gobbler..... we run about 30 yards in the woods and set up aon a couple of different trees so we can cover more ground... the tom gobbles about 100 yards out and BL answers him ha hammers and hammers coming to us. I see the bird and he goes to strutting and putting on a show at about 75 yards BL calls the bird comes a runnin staraight to me stops and Boom 11.25 beard 1 3/16 right spur 7/8 left spur(broken) 21 pounds
best bird to date and went from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs in about 5 minutes
4/12/14 Claiborne went to shivers and had 8 birds get cranked up went and set up on the edge of a old log piling....not knowing this piece of property that well really cost me on setting up on these birds had a great hunt couldn't get any to cooperate but heard 8 different birds gobble for a total of 179 gobbles saw 1 tom 2 jakes and 3 hens
4/13 big line got to a listening spot and had 5 birds sound off so I head down a logging road and get set up and as I make the first call a bird gobble further down so I though I hadn't come quite far enuff so I get up and go another hundred yards or so and I set up again..... make a few soft yelps and the first bird I set up on hammers at bout 150 yards from where I had originally set up, I decide to just sit tight.... after about 45 minutes or so I am just about to doze off and I look through the brush and I see a fan in the logging road right whre I had originally set up then it disappears,,,, 30 minutes pass and out of no where he hammers to my right at about 60 yards.... I make a purr and soft yelp he blows me away I get the gun up and he appears between 2 trees. I talk myself out of shooting because I think he is to far and I cant coax him in any closer and he eases on his way gobbling the whole time.... I wait a few minutes and try to circle around him and set up and call and have 2 birds answer and they were gobbling on their on and all of a sudden at about 75 yard they shut up and say not another thing... my guess they henned up.... great hunt 5 different gobblers gobbled 59 times 2 gobblers seen 3 hens seen and 1 unknown
